If you’re a US citizen applying for a UK passport, it’s important to understand that holding a British passport is not the first step in the process—it is the final one. A UK passport is granted only to individuals who already have British Citizenship. So, before applying, you must first complete the citizenship process, typically through naturalization or by proving British nationality through descent or other special circumstances.
For most U.S. citizens, becoming eligible for a UK passport involves going through the British naturalization route. This process usually requires five years of legal residence in the UK, followed by one year holding Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). Once naturalized, applicants receive a certificate of British Citizenship, which then qualifies them to apply for a passport through His Majesty’s Passport Office.
Once your British Citizenship has been granted, the application for a UK passport can be made either from within the UK or from abroad. U.S. residents can apply online through the official UK government portal, and will typically need to submit their naturalization certificate, proof of identity, and supporting documents such as a passport photo, and if applicable, a copy of their U.S. passport.
Processing times for overseas passport applications can vary, but most take around 10–12 weeks. Applicants will also need to attend a biometrics appointment at a designated location in the U.S., often a Her Majesty’s Passport Office (HMPO) partner agency or British consulate.
It’s also important to note that dual citizenship between the UK and USA is permitted by both governments. As a result, you can lawfully hold both a U.S. passport and a UK passport. However, there may be considerations related to taxes, military service obligations, or legal jurisdiction, depending on your circumstances.
